Carrot Cake Doughnuts – What’s your NumNoms Crazy Creation?

Num Noms are all about crazy food creations, the little cute, scented characters are all about creating your own flavour fusion by mixing a little num with a little nom. It’s a recipe for mischief with so many different combinations.

We’ve seen the Cronut (donut and croissant combination), a genius idea, which brought together two of our favourite pastry items into one amazing desert. Next it was the turn of green tea cake, for the slightly more health conscious, which saw a refreshing cake born from a popular hot beverage. More recently, Marks and Spencer introduced the Croloaf, a loaf of bread make out of croissants –yum!

But they are old news and now it is time for Num Noms fans to take to the kitchen and create their own Crazy Creations inspired by the different Num Noms themes and flavours.

We was invited along to join the next Num Noms foodie campaign. we were challenged to get creative in the kitchen to combine the wackiest of flavours and make the tastiest of food combination.

First we had a look through the num noms menu for some inspiration

We picked out the num noms that we wanted to work with and then set to it in the kitchen to create our foodie masterpiece

We picked out

  • Maple Sugars who is from the doughnut family
  • Bunny carrot who is a veggie
  • Softy Mallow who is a marshmallow
  • Blueberry Stampit

And we came up with a carrot doughnut with a blueberry and marshmallow centre

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups plain flour
  • 1/4 caster sugar
  • 2 carrots grated
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 3/4 milk
  • 1 medium egg
  • oil for frying
  • blueberries
  • mini marshmallows

Method:

  • Combine the dry ingredients together; flour, baking powder, salt and nutmeg
  • Add in the oil, milk, carrot and egg and mix well
  • Heat the oil in a pan. Test the oil with a crumb of bread, if it sizzles and turns brown it’s ready.
  • Using a tablespoon, drop the mixture a spoonful at a time into the hot oil. Don’t over fill the spoon as i found that the smaller the better for the doughnut to be cooked all the way through
  • Fry until light brown all the way around the doughnut, about 2 minutes each side.
  • Remove from hot oil and drain on some paper towels
  • Cut a little hole in the bottom of the doughnut and push in a blueberry and marshmallow
  • Sprinkle with a little icing sugar and drizzle with maple syrup

Party time with Num Noms and Bella Italia

My boys are proof that Num Noms are not just for girls.

When the email landed into my inbox, inviting us along to a Num Noms pizza party at Bella Italia, I firstly asked the boys if they were interested in attending. Having three boys, I have never heard of NumNoms. I had seen them in the shop but not paid much attention to them as my boys had not shown an interest in them. At first they were a little apprehensive about them event being a little girly, but I have always encouraged them to be a bit different and not shy away from playing or trying new things. Plus, I think the fact that there was Pizza making involved helped make their mind up.

Num Noms are little mini scented stackable collectables. To create your own fusion flavour, you mix a Num with a Nom. Num Noms are the cutest little squashy things that smell real good too. With over 5,000 mix and match combinations, children can play chef and create wacky combos. How about a blueberry, banana, pancake – yum! Or some Wasabi ice cream – yuck!

Uniquely scented, each Num and Nom character is full of surprises. Nums are the outer, soft squishy, hollow characters that nestle on top of Noms, which are either fun scented stamps, motorized, lovely lip glosses or a funky eraser.

The event was to be held at Bella Italia, Bluewater. We made our way there by train, arriving a little late we had missed the group pizza making. As we arrived at the restaurant we didn’t have to look far to see where we was going. A section of the restaurant had been set aside for the Num Noms party. We was immediately greeted by the event holders and shown to a table where the boys was all given a huge deep pan pizza base and a good selection of toppings to create their own pizza masterpiece.

The boys couldn’t have been any happier, they was only expecting to make a pizza between them, not each one each to themselves.

With smiles on their faces, they got creating. The eldest went for a vegetable pizza, the middle boy decided on a ham and mushroom and the youngest added the italian touch and chose olives and meatballs. I think encouraging children to make their own foods helps with their culinary skills but also widens their taste buds. Children will often experience more with food if they make it themselves.

Once the pizza was taken off to be baked in the oven, the boys had a little look around at the other activities for them to try.

Take the Num Nom stacking challenge – On the floor was hundreds of lovely smelling num noms to stack as high as you could.

Design your own Num Nom – There were colouring sheets with an outline of a num nom and all you had to do was colour and decorate them to your choice

This was the youngest favourite activity, he loves to colour in and really enjoyed designing a ninja num nom.

Guess the flavour – This was a fun game where, once blindfolded, you had to guess what the item of food hiding beneath the plates were just by smelling it.

Funny how your sense of smell can play tricks with your mind. The middle boy got most correctly but got a little confused with the orange thinking that it was lemon. He knew straight away the chips and chocolate.

Num Nom face painting station – The eldest kept clear of this activity, funnily enough, but the youngest one couldn’t wait to get a num nom painted on his arms. Once he chose the design he wanted from a piece of paper, the artist then got drawing on him

And last of all

Build your own ice cream sundae – A favourite of all the boys. Well who doesn’t like ice cream. With a great selection to choose from, they picked out two flavours each to mix them together

Once they had tried out the activities the boys were called over to the table where their pizza creations were waiting for them to be eaten

Don’t they look good?

I think they did well. I now know that the boys are mini little chefs in the kitchen and will be encouraging them to make more pizzas at home.

The boys thoroughly enjoyed themselves at the event and even got themselves some Num Noms to enjoy at home. They may have passed over the lip gloss Nom to me though. The staff were friendly and there were plenty activities going on to keep the children happy and entertained.

Fans of Num Noms can now add to their collections with savory flavours inspired by brunch dishes, such as Becca Bacon, delicious pizza flavours including Mozza Rella, sophisticated sushi snacks and yummy dinner foods. Plus, there are even more tasty sweet flavours inspired by fairground foods, freezie pops cupcakes and ice creams!

We was invited along to the event for the purpose of this post
