Shrek the Musical tells the story of a swamp-dwelling ogre who goes on a life changing adventure to reclaim the deed to his land. The ogre who loves the solitude in his swamp, finds his life interrupted when many fairytale characters are exiled into his swamp by order of the fairytale-hating Lord Farquaad. When they tell him they have no where else to go Shrek tells them that he will go ask Farquaad to send them back.

Shrek and the wise cracking Donkey travel to Farquaad’s palace. In order to become a king, Lord Farquaad enlists the help of the green ogre Shrek to go rescue the Princess Fiona  from a tower fortress being guarded by a fire-breathing dragon so he can marry her. Though Shrek isn’t looking for any friends, he and Donkey do develop a bond on their quest, and once he meets Fiona, the nasty Ogre begins to develop tender, romantic feelings for the first time even though he knows she’s promised to another, Shrek learns that friendship and true love aren’t only found in fairytales.

“The musical is based on the story and characters from William Steig’s book Shrek!, as well as the DreamWorks Animation film and features a book and lyrics by Pulitzer Prize winner, David Lindsay-Abaire, music by Olivier Award winner Jeanine Tesori, and is directed by Tony Award Nominee Jason Moore. Shrek the Musical is produced by DreamWorks Theatricals and Neal Street Production ltd.”

I knew from the start that this DVD would be a huge hit with my boys, Jak has performed a number of the hits from the show in his Theatre productions with theatre school, So I knew for sure that he would enjoy watching it, as well as the other two boys who love to sing. The boys sat down to watch the Musical DVD, with popcorn in hand and a blanket wrapped round them on the living room floor (they couldn’t get near enough to the screen!)

Jak: It was the part when Shrek sang to Princess Fiona in the wedding scene and she turned into an Ogre
