Move over Jamie Oliver! Jak Wright is cooking up a storm in the kitchen!
Ever since I can remember my eldest, Jak, has enjoyed baking cakes with me and just recently, as he his 10, I have allowed him to do his own baking. He has come up with some lovely tasty ideas and I must admit they have all been really nice.
Whenever I am in the kitchen and the boys can hear the scales coming out from the cupboard and the bowl being placed on the side they come running in to offer their help, Joseph enjoys doing the mixing and Jak cracks the eggs and does the measuring. Once the mixture is all mixed up, they attempt to place it into the cake cases (I say attempt as the side gets more of the mixture than the cases do lol) Once all in the cases I take over and place them into the oven and when they are done I take them out, then the fun begins! As the cakes cool the boys come up with ideas on how to decorate them, some of their ideas have been almond buttercream, green peppermint icing, Squirty cream with bananas and coffee cream. Once they have done their topping they then have lots of fun putting hundreds and thousands or sweets on top.
I really enjoy the time that we spend together in the kitchen, I used to worry the fact that I had all boys that they wouldn’t want to bake with me saying that its too girly, but not my boys, they love it!
Jak enjoys baking that much that I have bought him his own cook book ‘Annabel’s kitchen’ which has simple step by step instructions on how to cook food from around the world in a fun and easy way.
Cooking with your children should be fun and enjoyable and it should be a skill that all children should learn. I remember the days when I used to help my mum in the kitchen and how much I enjoyed spending time with her teaching me the basics of baking a banana cake or helping her prepare the dinner, I remember feeling close to my mum and enjoying that special time we had together, this is something that I want my children to remember about our time together too!
So far Jak has cooked a Fruity Chicken Korma served with Naan Bread with Sultanas
Krispie Chicken Nuggets – Marinated chicken coated in crushed rice krispies.
I love how Jak just grabs his cookbook and heads to the kitchen, he does all the preparation himself (This may take him a long time but its worth it) but he needs help with the oven for obvious reasons!
Do your children like to cook/bake? What’s their favourite recipe to do?
Thank you for reading my post 🙂
